Post your tips on branding here to help others and we'll give a web link back to your site as a reward!

Here's a quicky... and a classic. A brand is not a logo or the colour of your web site.

A brand is the personality, tone, thought, feeling, character of the business - often about the business owner him/herself. Once you understand this, it can manifest itself into everything you do, the font you use, the choice of words, imagery, humour, promotional channels, etc, etc. Also, it usually takes a long, long time to develop a brand that can truely command the premium price you want for your service. And what's more, when you start out you'll never really know if you'll ever get there! One step at a time...

  • Jan Bowers 01/12/09 11:04 - A brand logo that visually works well via different communication channels can be a big plus for your business. For most of us there isn't one form of marketing that will provide us with all the opportunities we require to maintain and grow our businesses. If only it were that simple!

An easily recognizable logo, seen repeatedly in different 'locations', can really help your brand awareness, which in turn will lead to business.

So make sure you have branding that represents you and your business and take every opportunity to promote it.

A brand is only as strong as the audience that recognises it! And the more you see it, the more interested you become.

  • DRB 18/11/09 16:28 - Hi Jeanette, Glad this blog was useful to you. There are many good things about you, but the one that stands out is that you persevere and 'get on with it'. Sometimes things are more of a long slog rather than a quick hit. Expecting the whole world to stop revolving, to look at you and fully understand just how great you are is not a reality.
Branding takes time, rather like a good wine or mature cheese. You know what I mean! Thanks for your comment. Take care.

  • Jeanette Harkness 18/11/09 16:19 - Brilliant info and how true all the above is. I absolutely love my brand - I'm told that it is memorable, gives positive vibes and makes people smile, yesterday someone said it made them feel relaxed just looking at it. Most importantly, people say it reflects my personality - you would have to meet me to comment on that! With regard to improvements, my website is currently being updated and improved. Glad to know I'm in line with the above advice. Thanks

    • The brand is so much more than a pretty logo, Focus on what your business delivers for its customers. Your brand is no good to you if it isn't delivering what customers want
    .
    • Take ownership of your brand. Pay attention to customers' needs, but you should still control what you want your brand to mean to them.

    • Focus on a small number of key brand values – what do you want to be famous for?

    • Include your employees on the journey. They must understand your brand and believe in it to communicate it effectively to your customers

    • Be consistent. Every aspect of your business should make customers feel the same way about you.

    • Ask yourself, do your systems support your brand. (Do you deliver on time? With a smile, provide best advice... is the customers experience congruent with the brand?

    • Be ruthlessly honest about the brand and what you stand for. If you don't believe in your brand, no one else will.

    • Communicate your brand. Make sure every advertisement, brochure and letter helps reinforce the same message. If you have a logo, use it everywhere, but make sure the quality is consistent.

    • Meet and exceed what your brand promises. Failing, just once, can cause lasting damage to your brand.

    • Manage your brand. Continually look for opportunities to make improvements.
Don't be afraid to make adapt the brand to reflect changes in your business or new market trends..
