At networking events, many people are reticent to engage because they are used to being sold too. Once you introduce yourself, give them all the focus and ask what you can do for them.
It will help the conversation flow much better and they will eventually want to know more about you.
There's nothing more off-putting than somebody launching into a sales pitch of their latest new widget.
Just be human!

- Hi Nick,
That's so true. How often have we seen people 'drift' into networking events, stand in the corner or hide behind a tea cup, then drift away again without really achieving anything. It's all about confidence as well of course, but focusing on your purpose for networking is crucial. Good post.

- Networking without clearly defined objectives can be hazardous. Who do you want to speak to? How many people could you commit to communicating with? Do you have a particular offer available that you want to make sure you communicate at every opportunity? Go networking with a purpose!

- Hi Helen,
So true. I especially like to bit about smiling. Business can be so dull! -
- People buy people- it's a fact! When networking you are only selling yourself, not your company, it's services or products. You are the face of your business and when you make a great impression and they have a need for the services you offer, you are the portal through which the prospect will come. Maybe not immediately, but later, as long as you keep in touch. Oh and a smile works wonders!
