we had no idea what we were doing taking on a grade 2 listed building!

the gumption story...

People often ask how Gumption started, so here's our story:

It all began with a knock on David & Gerry's door. John asked if he could go into the back garden to see the views. Being somewhat confused but strangely at ease, David welcomed the 2 strangers in and Gerry poured them a large glass of something.

John & Janis loved it so much (and the neighbours too David would say), that they bought the cottage next door!

The relationship between all 4 grew over the years and it soon became inevitable that David & John would end up working together somehow. So, a few years later ...

... somebody bought them lunch (yep, a free one) opposite a beautiful, yet delapidated old stone building in the middle of Bradford city centre.

"What would you do with that David?" someone asked. "Build a proper business centre where people can flourish and have some fun" was his typically direct reply. John, untypically direct, immediately called the estate agent and chased the deal.

So, with new children on the way and while earning a decent wage in their steady 9 to 5 jobs, they put their houses on the line and went for it.
Great timing guys!

"What do we do now?", David asked. "I don't know", said John. And they've been making it up ever since!

Yes, the business plan took over a year to develop and yes they took a personal risk. But maybe that's the secret to their success:
They are no different to the customers they care for. It's a team thing.

Moving on, they're quietly proud of their business award which also recognises their contribution to the local community:

CHARITY - They support Little Heroes Cancer Trust which helps to 'buy a smile' in young children who are undergoing very painful & distressing cancer treatments.

YOUNG PEOPLE - They support them by volunteering time to help develop career choices and employment preparation.

ENVIRONMENT - They constantly try to improve their environmental credentials so "our kids don't have to pay".

OTHERS - Sshhh. They sometimes give stuff away for free to people who can't afford it. But don't tell!

If there's something they can do for you, just ask. They struggle to say no!
